Nicaragua

Nicaragua coffee has earned a reputation for being lightly sweet, having well balanced acidity and for being full bodied. But this reputation only came after a difficult period in the Nicaragua coffee industry. Several years ago the world coffee prices plummeted. As a result a Nicaragua coffee crisis occurred, because coffee farmers could not produce the coffee cheap enough. Many people who depended upon the coffee plantations for work were laid off. It was a very sad and difficult time.

But Nicaragua proved to be resilient. The farmers were more than willing to learn new techniques that lowered cost without sacrificing flavor. Because the Nicaraguan coffee farms are generally small and used to farming without chemicals, it only made sense that many of their coffees could be certified as organic. In addition, Fair Trade certification assured the farmers would begin getting a fair price for their product. The coffee crisis in Nicaragua lasted for years, and for a while there were many Nicaragua coffee plantations for sale. But many Nicaragua coffee plantations managed to survive the crisis and now produce excellent gourmet coffees that rival the best. The Nicaragua coffee bean roasts range from medium to dark.

Nicaragua coffee is now considered to be progressive gourmet coffee. Some of the plantations have an unusual method of handling coffee crops. The coffee is grown on farms and then often delivered wet to the mill. This is because some of the farms do not have large enough areas for drying platforms. The climate can often be too wet also, which hinders the drying process. The key to maintaining the coffee quality is getting the harvested wet beans to the drying platforms as quickly as possible. Nicaragua farmers are experts in coffee growing and this system works for their purposes. In the warehouses holding Nicaragua coffee, burlap is used for coffee storage bags for the better lots of coffee.

As Nicaragua continues to improve its coffee growing techniques, the coffee tradition continues. Consistent quality and flavor is monitored through regular Cup of Excellence cupping competitions held nationally and internationally. These competitions bring the farmers together as an industry and result in continual coffee improvements. Nicaragua coffees have won awards at many of the coffee shows. For grinds, blends, organic coffees, and coffee beans, Nicaragua is the Central American country that’s a rising star.
